SAXER LÜCKE

December 2016

Being stuck under a thick layer of fog all week, we decided to go on a hike in the Alpstein mountains. Even though it was already the middle of December, the snow still hadn’t really arrived, not even in parts of the Alps. So even though this would technically be a winter hike, it definitely felt a lot more like late autumn with quite enjoyable temperatures in the sun above the clouds.

The cable car up to Stauberen, the starting point of this hike, ran until 10:00pm, which meant that we didn’t have to go back down before the good light came out. And so we hiked through the beautiful late afternoon sunshine along this very enjoyable trail with constant views over the Alpstein Range and the Fählensee which sits like a Norwegian fjord in between almost vertical walls of tremendous height. As soon as you reach the Saxer Lücke, you are treated with an amazing panorama including the rather well-known jagged peaks of the Kreuzberge.

The view over the sea of fog that laid like a blanket across the whole Rhine valley was nothing short of incredible and this ended up being one of my favorite days of 2016. Some of these photos will always have a special place in my heart. Upon our return at the Stauberen station, we also witnessed a beautiful sunset in this stunning location. All in all, this had been a perfect December day.
